What is Head & Scalp Cyst Removal?

Cysts occur when a fluid-filled sac forms on or just beneath the skin. Blockages in the oil glands or hair follicles commonly cause head and scalp cysts. Some cells in the top layer of the skin produce keratin (a protein that gives skin its strength and flexibility). Usually, the keratin is transported to the surface of the skin as it starts to die so it can be shed. Sometimes, if there are blockages, the cells move deeper, past the surface of the skin where they can begin to multiply.

Cysts can be quite painful, causing localised swelling, redness and inflammation.

Your doctor or dermatologist will be able to determine the best course of treatment for you. In some cases, cysts can be removed surgically.

What does the treatment for Head & Scalp Cyst Removal involve?

Head and scalp cyst removals are quick and straightforward procedures. I advise my patients to take some paracetamol prior to their visit. I use relaxing music and a tapping technique to make your procedure as pleasant as possible.

Having removed your scalp or head cyst, I’ll close the would accurately under magnification. For cyst removal, I use soluble stitches. There’s no need for a repeat visit as the stitches dissolve all by themselves.

Recovery from Head & Scalp Cyst Removal

Recovery from a cyst is quick, but good hygiene practices must be followed to ensure a rapid recovery.

The face and scalp tend to heal in a week or so. Some areas of the head can take longer. The soluble stitches usually last for two to three weeks, sometimes a little longer.

What you can expect from Head & Scalp Cyst Removal

Your wound may be covered with a small dressing when you leave. Once this comes off, I usually ask patients to apply antiseptic cream to help the wound to heal well.

For scalp cysts, washing your hair the next day is possible. Just be gentle with the area.

Excellent care from start to finish

August 10, 2026

I recently had some veins treated in my Leg and, and as I was quite nervous, I really appreciated how lovely and reassuring everyone was.

The surgeon Simon was friendly, professional and put me completely at ease, and the nurse Becky was absolutely lovely and caring. They both made the whole experience much easier than I expected.

I’m very grateful for their care and would definitely recommend them.

Lipoma removal

June 3, 2026

Found Simon to be very professional and diligent within his work, the whole process took no more than an hour, I was made to feel at ease, comfortable and confident in Simon’s abilities. The cut was bigger & deeper than I expected, but that is more due to my own preconceived conceptions, Simon explained the whole process very well and detailed everything clearly before the operation went ahead, my head is healing up nicely.

Absolutely would thoroughly recommend using Simon as recently had a cyst removed in a particular sensitive area. Felt at ease from the initial consultation through to the operation and final follow up. Special mention to his staff who had to put up with my ramblings during the op!!
